Chihuahua, Chih., June 22, 2022.- At the Centro de Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres (Women’s Human Rights Center, CEDEHM) we condemn and regret the tragedy that occurred last Monday, June 20, 2022, in which there were several victims, including two Jesuit priests, Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, as well as tour guide Pedro Eleodoro Palma Gutiérrez.
CEDEHM is accompanying the family of Pedro Palma in demanding that the authorities clarify the facts. Additionally, there are different versions not officially confirmed that there could be at least three other people who disappeared in the same event.
It is important that the authorities and the media share accurate, complete and clear information about the events that occurred and all the people who are disappeared, as this is a case of public interest.
Tragedies like that of Cerocahui are the result of impunity, as well as the omissions of the State in its duty to guarantee the security and rights of all people, therefore it is essential that concrete and forceful actions be carried out to maintain peace in the Sierra Tarahumara.
We stand in solidarity with the community of Cerocahui, in the municipality of Urique, Chihuahua; we recognize the work of the Jesuit priests in their service to the communities in the Sierra de Chihuahua, we extend our most sincere condolences to their families and loved ones. May the demand for truth and justice remain alive.
