We demand that the voices of human rights defenders and journalists be heard – Voces Contra el Poder (Voices Against Power)
3 / diciembre / 24
Today, four civil society organizations came together: Centro de Derechos Humanos de las Mujeres A.C., Alianza Sierra Madre A.C., Derechos Humanos Integrales en Acción A.C., and the Group of family members of disappeared individuals Casa de la esperanza, under the coordination of El Día Después. Our goal was to share the life stories of human rights defenders and journalists in Chihuahua through the play «Voces contra el poder” (Voices against power).
From this platform, we demand that the voices of human rights defenders and journalists be heard without this leading to threats, harassment, defamation, or murder. The work we do is a commitment to life, striving for change that will improve the well-being of many people, including those who are not part of vulnerable communities. Therefore, it is essential to stand up for those who defend others and to empathize with their struggles.
We urge citizens to join us in the work being done to defend dignity, bring light to injustice, and confront the impunity that still exists throughout Mexico to this day. But above all, it is crucial to extend the call to the main party responsible, the State, which has failed to fulfill its obligation to guarantee our rights.
The exercise we are presenting today is yet another step towards helping individuals, families, and communities who have been fighting and resisting for many years to achieve truth, justice, comprehensive reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence. It also aims to provide a better quality of life for future generations.
We demand that the authorities listen, attend to, and work on combating impunity and structural problems. Otherwise, all efforts will continue to be merely palliative.
The state’s debt is abysmal and we, civil society organizations, will not cease to point out the oversights. We will continue to insist on the full guarantee of human rights for all individuals.
Mexico is a country that suffers from a lack of social justice and in which there is still a long way to go to guarantee human rights for all people. Our work is medullary in the demand for truth, justice, and reparation. Continuing this cause is work that cannot cease and doing so requires solidarity and support.
